Diversity Mission Statement
Everyone should have equal access to science careers. While this sounds ideal, this practice rarely happens. Science loses excellent talent from diverse backgrounds because the system mostly favors individuals with privileged backgrounds. Consequentially, additional efforts and programs are needed to attract and retain underrepresented talent in science. Fostering diversity, inclusivity, and equity in science is important because different perspectives and experiences can help lead to novel research directions. Diversity, inclusivity, and equity in science are also essential because it is the right thing to do, both ethically and for building a sustainable future that reflects society.
The McCary Lab will recruit and support members from varied backgrounds and groups that have historically been and continue to be marginalized. We are especially committed to creating a working environment that is safe for everyone regardless of their race, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, age, and any other aspects of individuals’ identities. We cultivate an environment where we can learn how to communicate with people from diverse backgrounds and perspectives. At the forefront of our lab’s mission, we are actively encouraging conversations about diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice. We also honor and acknowledge Indigenous lands where our research is conducted while also highlighting the contributions of people from marginalized populations. We will work to ensure accessible accommodations for those who need it. This is a dynamic process, and we will work continuously to improve efforts toward these goals.
